Sorry guys! Its been ages a lot has happened and it is going to be a long one! I’m going to do it all in one so I can get back up to speed so buckle your seat belts we are in for a long one! I’ll try and stick in loads of comical photos so hopefully you won’t get too bored! Papa Dre (as Joe and I now formally address him) arrived at our five star hotel as previously featured:
He was in one piece and good spirits, he even managed to sneak up on us by the pool even though we were keeping a watchful eye on reception! He checked into his room which was upgraded to superior and then chilled by the pool with us. We had a pretty relaxed first day and then headed into town for some traditional Thai food… We booked the bus and boat for the next day and all opted for a relatively early night after a few too many cocktails.
Bright and early the next morning got up and headed to the hotel for breakfast! Dad had a full english I had my usual toast and peanut butter and Joe had 2 coffees, 3 orange juices, 2 cups of water and half a croissant. The boat didn’t collect us until 1 so we spent time by the pool with some of the people Joe and I had got to know over the last few days! Then we all checked out and headed for the bus. Just before the bus arrived to take us to the ferry, Joe started being sick (repeatedly) however assured us that it would pass. With hindsight, eating left over sushi in the tropical heat probably wasn’t a great move so only so much sympathy could be given. The bus collected us promptly but it was a tight squeeze, not sure Papa Dre was too impressed with the luggage storage facilities. We arrived at the ferry port and there was a massive queue we all got stickers and were advised to get off at the first stop. on we all got and the journey actually went quite smoothly.
We got our first glimpse of Phi Phi which seemed nice, not too lively yet, a man was waiting to help us with our baggage as there aren’t really any roads on this island he collected the bags in a cart and pushed it in front of him telling us to follow behind, to which we obliged. We were tired out first night but we found a pub that does Guiness so I was quite impressed and the boys enjoyed some cocktails.
The second day we went to our pool at the hotel the rooms are nice here and we even have an adjoining door! Very fancy. the pool was okay not the best, Papa Dre has already scouted one out in town that he likes the look of. Never the less we stayed around the pool and tried to fool the Panorama and get everyone in more than once! This took a few attempts but we kind of got there in the end what do you think?
This evening we had already scoped out a Reggae Muay Thai boxing bar that looked like good fun! We thought it would be actual thai fighters that train in this very unforgiving discipline but it turned out to be a load of drunk (mainly British) yobs that thought it was funny to fight each other. Joe spent the entire evening explaining how he would “batter’ any contender however promised that he wouldn’t get in the ring. We we’re then 4 or 5 buckets of booze in and Joe got up to go to the toilet, before making a B line for the ring and jumping straight in, sneaky. I think you’ve all seen the video but i’ll share some photos just incase. to be fair considering the guy he fought had been training for 9 months in Thailand Joe didn’t do too badly. We have since been back to said bar and seen a lot of people get knocked out and seriously beat up! But what can I say when in Thailand…. Check out the refs comb over hahaah!!!
We spent some time at the beach the next day, but it was very hot hot hot and there wasn’t much in the way of shade or sun beds. We decided to opt for the pool papa Dre had previously spotted. Pool was lovely. There are signs everywhere saying that you have to pay but we avoided the pool police and somehow got away with it. Joe’s started to feel ill with a severe case of man flu (and a dented ego after his fight last night) so we had an afternoon nap and let papa Dre soak up some rays. That night we headed to a little live music destination and had a few drinks and a bit of a dance. The music was a typical Thai man singing pop covers but the guy was quite funny and more of a comedian so we all had a good night… got some pizza for a midnight snack and then headed home.
We had another day of relaxing then booked a boat trip for the following day so opted for some nice food and an early night The foods has been a little disappointing in phi phi so far. We have started really using trip advisor a few of our faves have been:
-Matts Restaurant – papa Dre had a really nice breakfast here one morning while Joe and I enjoyed some vitamins in the form of delicious smoothies. And their evening BBQ Buffet is definitely worth a shout if you’re in the area.
-Unni’s – owned by ex pats with a slight mexican theme but varied menu can def recommend the peri peri chicken (not quite nandos but you can’t have everything) the boys were happy with their mains as well.
-PP Arcade – Papa Dre and I went here alone as Joe was very ill one evening we both had pasta and it was delicious.
If I had the time the boat trip we did really does deserve a post all of its own but i’m gunna stick it in here as i’m feeling lazy. The boat tour we chose was called shipwrecked. Joe was against it from the get go as he felt it wasn’t a good idea taking Papa Dre on a booze cruise. (In hindsight maybe he was right even though we all had a good time) We picked shipwrecked as it seems like one of the bigger companies and you pay one price for food, boat, 6 destinations, snorkelling, Maya bay entry and all you can drink spirits, beer, water, soft drinks. It all started well we had a lie in as didn’t have to be there until 1pm. When we got there the rep was pouring vodka into peoples mouths and the tone was set. The boat was crammed, ours wasn’t too wild though we had 3 South African girls who got a bit wild and an American lad that got so drunk he lost his glasses and was left blind. But other than that everyone was quite sensible for our standards. First stop Monkey Island we fed the monkeys which was cute but the place is just a tourist trap so may people on one tiny beach. Papa Dre had now come to the conclusion this tour should be called Shitfaced instead of Ship Wrecked. Joe continued to say “I told you so” before pouring himself another free whiskey.
So far so good the boat driver seemed a bit crazy though and was zig zagging the speed boat all over the place. We had a few more drinks next stop Maya bay! Just before we got there the rain blew in almost out of nowhere and there was a lot of rain. And thunder. And lightening. Oh well we have to swim in anyway so everyone jumped off. The rain got worse and worse. the beach was not impressive and to me that is nothing to do with the rain as i’ve since been back. In fact you can hardly see the beach as it is covered in people! We saw the camp where Leanardo Di Caprio stayed when they were filming the film (The Beach) and walked back getting soaked and even a bit cold. This is where it all went a bit wrong and wasn’t really as funny any more. We had to get back to the boat. 3 boats were beached as the wind that blew the rain in appeared to have blown the tide out. The drivers had all their passengers trying to push the boats back out to sea! it didn’t appear to be working. Luckily our captain had the sense to drive back out after he’d dropped us off. but this meant a swim or more of a wade to cut a long story short basically everyone was bleeding by the time we got back on the boat due to waves blowing us all over the place and sharp coral. I also had a sea urchin stuck in my foot and was not impressed. I think the rep who fessed up to not being the best swimmer was a little worried but didn’t make it any better by stating that if we said on trip advisor the weather was bad no-one would believe us. All in all it was quite funny and everyone had a laugh about it after another beer.
We visited a few caves and a spot called Viking Cave, which is run by the mafia, where men free climb to find some birds nest thats apparently a delicacy in china. And sells for $800 a plate or something. I’m a bit dubious about our reps knowledge and need to do some further research into this at a later date.
The highlight of the trip for the three of us was probably the snorkelling all being keen divers we were first off the boat to have a look and saw some pretty cool stuff including a sea snake, clown fish, barracuda and lots of parrot fish (My personal favourite). we spent about an hour in the water around the bay and then headed off to our next destination. Not quite sure what we were meant to be doing here we got told to sit on our life jackets and just float by now some were very drunk so everyone was getting on smashingly so we did as we were told and floated around with our drinks in hand. We headed back to town and got showered and donned our matching t-shirts ready for the after party. We drank a lot more and played a few rounds of beer pong. The night ended at slinky where dad had a go on the rodeo bull and I tested my skills on the pole and fire limbo. We had to leave earlyish as I was too drunk and stopped for a slice of pizza on the way home.
*Look out for more footage of the boat tour in the up coming video of South Thailand*
The next day as you can imagine everyone was hungover and we all had a lie in… followed by heading back to the PP Princess pool and then out for food and more boxing saw a few knock outs tonight… while the Mauy Thai Reggae bar is probably our faves as drinks are cheap and there is free entertainment I personally like Breakers as they have Guiness so we headed there after to finish the night. Joe and Papa Dre also had a closer inspection of my foot with the sea urchin still embedded! I have since sought medical advice and decided that it’ll be alright left in there until it works its own way out.
On our last day Joe was seriously ill with man flu and couldn’t dive so stayed in bed to get some well needed rest Dad and i did two dives in the morning. Originally we wanted to do a wreck dive but they needed four people and no-one was booked on apart from us when we turned up in the morning so we go on a reef dive instead. Which we were both still pretty excited about. If anyones interested we went with a company called Island Divers and they really were 10//10. We saw a lot of cool fish I won’t bore you by listing them all. The pictures don’t really do it justice not sure if thats to do with the camera or my poor underwater photography skills! The company we went with were Island divers and I would recommend them to anyone who is thinking about diving in Phi Phi.
We finished the night off with an all you can eat buffet dinner! Tomorrow we leave early as we have another secret escapes booked (thanks Bill, Jacquie and Pete) and we want to enjoy every last minute. Phi Phi has been a blast i’m not sure on what I think of south Thailand i think i’m glad we saved it to last as it really is just a party with a few little sneaky extras thrown in.
If you’ve have made it to the end of this thank you and I hope I haven’t bored you all too much. As always thanks for reading and all my love to everyone back home it won’t be so long before you hear from me again as I already have the next blog post lined up!!
Would also like to say a massive thank you to my beloved Father, now know as Papa Dre. We have had an amazing week and hope that you have two. We cant thank you enough for sponsoring our hangovers and providing us with 3 square meals a day, and luxury accommodation. We hope that you can still afford that Patek Philippe watch you’ve been eyeing up all week.
Paris and Joe X
