Theres no place like home…

So this week Joe and I have been talking a lot about home and where it is and what it means blah blah blah. So I thought I’d take this opportunity to write a little post about what we came up with! Sit tight and enjoy and I’d love to know all your thoughts, wheres home for you?

So I’ll start with me and I guess home really is Wallingford! It a place I can leave for so long and will always be home. I know I can walk down the street and bump into people I know there. Most importantly its the home to my family and a lot of my friends. There are so many special memories in wallingford from running around castle gardens as a child to hanging down by the river in my teenage years! Not forgetting more recent memories of drinks in the OPO and boathouse. Its a town that I’ve grown up with and I think its grown up with me and the people around me. Everytime I leave, I go back and the details has changed while I guess some people see that as sad for me I just see it as normal after all I’ve changed too overtime. No one broke the deal and we’ll stay good friends but  I think Wallingford and I have different agendas now!

Essex is where I went to university, Writtle to be specific if you’re still not sure lets call it Chelmsford. Your university days are meant to be the “best days” of your life while I slightly disagree about that! Essex will always have a little bit of home unlike Wallingford thats grown with me. As I drive back through the winding countryside onto campus I’m over whelmed by a sense of nostalgia and reminded of all the great and crazy memories I  have had there! For the 3 years I spent at Uni I lived with my best friend the one and only Shabba! We often look back at these times and now in a world of buying houses and important jobs (on her part not on mine), I think its a place we both have fond memories we shared there. I think if you’d ask her she’d agree Essex has a little bit of home and to be honest with you it probably always will!

Next on… to my beautiful WALES! On a camping trip when I was probably about 16 with my wonderful Shabba! I told her that I’d marry a welsh man and move to Wales. And I kind of got my wish although I am still waiting for that ring. When Joe and I met 4 years ago we spent the first 4 months of our relationship in America which I’ll get to shortly. We managed about 3 months of long distance before Joe asked me to move up to Wales. I’m not sure even he was expecting me to turn up on Christmas Day declaring “here I am” with all my belongings packed into my little Clio and a job interview looming. But thats how my Wales adventure started. Over the 2 and a bit (I think :/) years we lived there we shared two beautiful houses, one in Beddgelert and one in Betws yn Rhos. I spent days walking around finding hidden corners and falling more and more in love with Joe and Snowdonia! Aww now ain’t that sweet. While more recently Joes mum and dad were visiting New Zealand, Joes mum asked me if I felt a connection with Wales and where we’d consider home if we went back. My answer was and still is definitely, Wales is more than home to me and I’m sorry Wallingford people but if we do come home I think ultimately it will be to Wales we return!

America is a different kind of home, its not a place I particularly miss or long to return to but… and heres the catch. I do really miss the time I spent there. Ask anyone who’s ever worked at camp, everyone around you becomes your family and in a way I guess that does make it home! Joe and I will def return, its where we met and holds some very fond memories check it out for yourself in this vid… (video credit to Nansi :))

Cat Ba is the first place we stayed rooted after 6 months on the move… if anyone reading this is traveling to Vietnam Cat Ba is the first place I would recommend! We had a fab time there but it was also a place of highs and lows. Job drama, and the place for real friends! We met some totally awesome people there! Some of whom we are still in regular touch with I’ll show you what we did in Vietnam if you’ve not already seen it… and if you have skip past!

I’ll also leave a little link here about some of our fave memories here it still all feels like yesterday and I’m a sucker for looking through old pictures. If you are headed that way check out my Top 10 things to do in Cat Ba

Last but not least! New Zealand. We arrived here with no money and no plan. The tiny little town of Hororata has opened its arms to us and this is a view that feels like home every day. Over the last year we’ve made a little Robindale family and later on a Riverlands one too which has spread wider over New Zealand and when we leave Robindale at the end of this season I know its a family that will continue to grow and grow as our adventure continues. While this family is dysfunctional its filled with characters and people we’ve lived with and grown to love, people that have shown us kindness while we’re thousands of miles away from home. We’ve celebrated Christmas and birthdays with these peoples as well as some of the smaller day to day achievements and goals that come with work. We have a local pub that after frequent visits is now filled with friendly faces every time we enter. Where ever we end up this place will always be a little piece of home right here! We’ve loved having Joes parents to visit and hope this year will bring us more visitors from overseas!

img_4684img_2417img_2745-1

Now I’m aware that all this rambling doesn’t answer the question so where is home? Joe says that he only wanted to come to NZ because he thought it might be the only place in the world better than North Wales. I think Wales is still in the frontline where as Joes opinion varies depending on how much he’s had to drink. I think my conclusion is that for me home is more of a person than a place. And works pretty well for me right now. I’d love to hear what everyones thoughts are? Where is home for you?

Why I don’t feel lucky!

There you go I said it… now this post might leave you thinking I’m a total ungrateful brat but I’m gunna say it anyway. I have had the best year and a half ever, seen the most amazing things and ticked off a lot of the bucket list but…. (and here it goes) I don’t feel lucky!!

Now let me explain, it’s something we hear all the time. “Oh you’re so lucky” “I’m so jealous you’re lucky to be on holiday again” “look at everywhere you’ve been, you’re so lucky” “you’re so lucky it’s summer, it’s freezing here” I’ve heard every kind of lucky you can think of. I’m kind of tuned out to it now but as someone said it the other day I thought about it a bit more. Am I lucky? I don’t think so and here’s why….

I didn’t win the lottery, or meet a genie to grant me 3 wishes 🧞‍♂️(I have been waiting so long to use that emoji in context). My fairy godmother didn’t come down from the heavens and wave a magic wand. I – without risk of putting words in Joes mouth -WE worked bloody hard to be here! And we’ve worked even harder to stay here. We are having a ball and obviously I’m grateful for the opportunity but I still don’t feel lucky. The way I see it is we made a choice and not an easy one. I left a job I loved that I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to and that’s something I think about every day, we left behind friends and family. And we prioritised our love for travel over buying that house or getting that promotion! I don’t regret one minute of it but think… would you tell someone they were lucky for getting A’s in A levels? Or getting that promotion they worked months and months for? Not only have we worked hard to get the money to afford our travels we’ve worked at how we do it! Made changes to our lives and habits and tweeked small things to make it work for us. So to be more specific… I don’t feel lucky for the opportunity. Sometimes I feel lucky for the perfect sunset or the best stars and I felt really lucky to have seen a sperm whale but you have to put yourself out there for a chance to witness all these things! A whale wasn’t going to jump out the Thames while I was having a pint down the Boathouse now was it?

^I think I’ll be sharing that photo for the rest of my life at every opportunity.

I love it, I’m happy, it’s not for everyone but it works for me and for us. I guess what I’m getting at is if you want something work hard until you get it we’re no different and definitely no luckier than anyone else! This world owes you nothing, and you could be a long time waiting for that fairy godmother or your 3 wishes… 🧞‍♂️

HOKITIKA yeah!!!

SO….. we left the pancake rocks behind and got in the car ready to head to Hokitika! First stop was the gorge. We went to the gorge soley because I saw a picture of a girl stood on the bridge and wanted to re-create this for Instagram. All the walks and tourist attractions around NZ are really well laid out and have good signs about what you should and shouldn’t do there and even signs telling you how long each part of the walk will take. Very informative and a lot more helpful than anywhere else I’ve visited. The start of the walk has beautiful views over the bluest water you ever did see. As we continued up the gorge the views just got better and better. Joe loved jumping on the bridge and annoying all the old ladies who were trying to go for a peaceful walk, and Pete enjoyed ruining every photo I tried to take. When we got to the other end of the walk  we climbed down some rocks and even had a paddle we did toy with the idea of swimming but despite it being a very warm day the water was FREEZING!!! Maybe next time!  If I was ever going to have a career as a professional mermaid I definitely think this is where I’d live! IMG_3637IMG_3639IMG_3640IMG_3641IMG_3648IMG_3653IMG_3655IMG_3656IMG_3657IMG_3659IMG_3660IMG_3661IMG_3665IMG_3666Once back in town and settled into a campsite we started coming up with plans for the next day! I put forward the idea of  going to the kiwi centre which is like a little  zoo experience! Joe and Pete needless to say took the piss, but we reached a conclusion that because I missed out on the shanty town museum we could go to the kiwi centre.  Safe to say the kiwi centre did not disappoint. We spent along time looking at a tank with 5 different types of fish in, this proved great entertainment trying to differentiate between them and of course everyone thinking they were right! We moved swiftly on…IMG_3669IMG_3672After dragging Joe away from the kids only section we stumbled upon a room called catch your own cray fish! now this sounds fun right? After a while of trying though we had no luck and were just about to leave when Joe saw some movement and reached for the net. He scooped up a beast of a cray fish and then proceeded to drop it all over the floor in a panic! Scared he was going to hurt the little guy I stepped up and impressed everyone with my cray fish handling skills. Great fun for us so imagine how much fun it’d be if you had some kids to entertain!!  IMG_3673IMG_3674IMG_3676IMG_3678

IMG_3679Safe to say we enjoyed the rest of our visit too. The highlight was  of course seeing the kiwi bird right at the end. Its a very low lit room as they are nocturnal but we saw him running around. They are pretty fascinating and if you’ve never seen one it is worth the visit just for that!  The next day we walked around the small museum  in the town  this was an average museum and we spent a lot of time talking to the guy who works there!  We went to the pub as always for a few drinks and I metioned that I’d seen another Instagram photo of a sign made out of drift wood that I wouldn’t mind taking a look at. Joe tried to fob me off with a sign we could see from the pub but eventually we managed to go for a walk down to the beach in order to hunt for my sign! We found it straight away and isn’t it beautiful? We ended the day with a bit of shopping and Joe even brought me a green stone necklace! All in all Hokitika is a great town, loads of character and so pretty! I’m sure Joe and I will be back! IMG_3683IMG_3688

Status: SEVEN WEEKS BEHIND –  GETTING CLOSE! Looking pretty unlikely, wish me luck!

HOLIDAY!!!!

So as you will or won’t know we’ve had a 2 week break from work to go on HOLIDAY with Joes parents who are visiting from Wales! Its going to take a few posts to catch you up on everything as we’ve been pretty busy and had no wifi so I’ve ben unable to write as we go as such! But I’ll start you right at the beginning in sunny Kaikora!

IMG_3380

Joe and I headed off early and stopped on the way to get some supplies the route was straight forward and the drive was beautiful! We arrived at the Top 10 campsite and were straight away greeted by Jacquie and Pete! I have to say it was brilliant to see them after all this time! With a lot the talk about we got the beers straight open and started catching up. we eventually decided to head into town and get some food and this was a short walk, Pete was adamant he knew the way but finally agreed to turn around when we ended up in some kind of dump! We enjoyed a dinner of Tapas and then headed back for a play in the park! And of course more beer. I woke up at 4am my normal get up time and Joe demanded some water so I went off in search and then finally managed to get back to sleep!

IMG_3378

The next day we headed on a trip Whale watching… the boat ride made me feel sick but everyone else loved it! This is a trip I can highly recommend and for ages it was full of suspense unsure of whether we’d get to see a whale but it didn’t disappoint! We saw a beautiful sperm whale and it was amazing def one of the highlights of the trip, the photos really do not do it justice! Along with this we saw a few sharks, dolphins and seals and an albatross! All in all a very good day! We had some fish and chips on the way back and then headed out to see if we could spot some seals!

IMG_3419IMG_3427IMG_3442IMG_3444

We found the car park we’d been directed to and climbed out of the vans to hunt for seals. At first we couldn’t see any but soon enough there was a seal abundance. we’d been previously warned to give them plenty of space as they can often attack on land. Joe and Pete took this as a challenge to see how close they could get to the poor things. I think we all have enough seal pictures to last a lifetime. We headed straight for the bar after this and then went on to get dinner in the town. All in all a very good start to our  little trip!

Hororata Highland games!

Work is busy and mating is in full swing and so far all going smoothly! These days off we’ve decided to take it relatively easy and not go into Christchurch we’re going to do a local food shop instead and spend some time chilling! We started by getting a bottle of gin and putting the world to rights with Kadsan and the rest of the lodge crew! Headache in the morning!

IMG_3277The next day it was time for the Hororata games and what fun they were!!! We headed down to the village and enjoyed a whiskey tasting and a seminar, caber tossing and even watched the highland fling. We ended the evening with a BBQ at Gemma and Dannys which was the perfect end to our days off! Safe to say we wanted to do it all over again.

IMG_3299IMG_3297IMG_3295IMG_3292IMG_3293IMG_3296

This week at work has been super busy and we’ve both had a lot of early starts.. we’ve also had a lot of takeaways to make up for it. We weighed and drenched calves this week which was entertaining for everyone involved, there was a lot of screaming and shouting and a lot of laughs too! Joe in particular took a battering when a very determined calf tried to get away from him and he was dragged 200ft across the floor determined not to be beaten! You can just about see him in the background of this picture doing some work!!!!

IMG_3304

We are getting super excited and super ready for our holiday now!! So I don’t know if we’ll be getting up to anything exciting these days off probably more sorting out camper van issues and clothes shopping so we have everything ready to go! Once again thanks for reading… likes, comments and subscribes are greatly appreciated love to you all!!

Status: EIGHT WEEKS BEHIND – Nearly finished the one I’m on and still have high hopes of completing especially considering I have a holiday coming up!!!!

C is for Comedy

So this weekend – I say weekend its Wednesday but it’s our weekend – we had decided to go into Christchurch and watch some comedy! I’d looked up a few different events and there is quite a lot going on in Christchurch when it comes to comedy and it all seemed to have a little underground feel to it! I picked the one that looked the best and its an open mic night held in a bar called Strange. We had a chat a few days before and decided that as the camper van is still in there garage it would be best to book a hotel for the night so we don’t have to worry about having a drink. Joe got on this and booked somewhere to stay and also started researching restaurants!

IMG_3103

First things first we headed to the shopping centre, I made a trip to the beauty salon while Joe went and got his hair cut! Then I had a quick shop and treated myself to some new lime crime makeup and got Joe a new t-shirt to wear this evening. We headed to the apartment Joe had booked with a quick stop at Burger King on the way Joe wasn’t impressed with his first NZ burger king experience but I can highly recommend the churros. The apartment wasn’t quite ready as we were a little early so we headed around the corner where we found a bar and started drinking wine. Everywhere in Christchurch seems to have the feel of an industrial estate or a building site. I put this down to the fact that they are rebuilding a lot of the city after the last earthquake but it does take a bit of getting used to. Saying that the more we get to know Christchurch the more we are aware of  a lot of hidden gems and this little pub was one of them.

IMG_3110IMG_3108

We managed to get to our apartment and it was a cute room! Very small but really nice we stuck a film on and headed straight to bed for an afternoon nap. Waking up refreshed if still a little groggy from the wine I got ready while Joe walked around the room in his pants complaining that his t-shirt was too tight.

IMG_3111IMG_3114

We ordered an uber from the app in true millennial fashion and headed out to the restaurant. The uber driver was very strange his name was puss which made us both laugh and he didn’t speak at all but had 5*s for great conversation. The restaurant Joe had chosen was called king of snake and came highly recommended going with the C theme it was a Chinese (with Thai infusion whatever that means). It was absolutely delicious we had a lovely meal of half a roasted crispy duck and beef ribs with jasmine rice. We cleaned our plates and were very impressed. However I must take this opportunity to add that NZ really is missing a trick when it comes to this crispy duck thing. Anyone who knows Joe and I will know we like a Chinese at home in fact we consider ourselves experts on the matter. We’ve searched high and low and nothing can compare to the crispy duck pancakes you can find in any Chinese at home! Our crispy duck tonight was amazing don’t worry but it wasn’t a patch on home alas I think its the closest we’ll get while we’re here. If anyone has been to New Zealand and can recommend any where we can find this luxury please let us know! We are serious and will travel for duck! Or if anyone can think of a way to send us a crispy duck that too would be appreciated! Joe had a nice watermelon cocktail with his dinner and I had a whiskey and ginger ale.

IMG_3118IMG_3120IMG_3136IMG_3139IMG_3140

We got another uber to strange and co where we were early for our comedy so enjoyed a few drinks outside. The venue was down a little alley with a few restaurants and cute it had a very London feel about it and we could have very easily been in the middle of soho. The comedy started and it was really good an open mic set up with a MC and 12 acts, so there was a lot of variety.

IMG_3128IMG_3143IMG_3148

Its safe to say we laughed a lot! We headed to Boo Radleys afterwards and had a few more drinks there before retiring back to our apartment! I think we can have the most fun on a night out what a good night. It was nice to get away from the house for a bit too evening if it is only to Christchurch. Safe to say the next day we’re pretty hanging and had a quick trolley dash round pack and save before heading home and back to bed! All in all a very successful date!

Status: TEN WEEKS BEHIND!!

B is for beach (and beef and beer)

B should really be for bad mood as thats what we both woke up in these 2 days off! The weather at work has been horrible and the weeks been long with lots of early mornings spent getting soaked! Despite this there have been a few bouts of sunshine and glorious sunrises. I’ve even been making friends with the pigs form the next door farm.

With this in mind our B date was destined to be a bit dreary as we’d decided to head to the beach! Sumner beach rot be specific. The beach was beautiful despite the weather and we spent some time exploring a few cave like rocks right on the seafront. After this we continued the B theme and headed straight for the nearest BAR! A cute little place where we watched the rain pour down from the comfort of inside.

That evening Joe cooked us a glorious dinner of roast BEEF while I BAKED a cake! We ended the day with an early night and a film in BED! All in all a pretty low key B date but a good day out all the same!! We have started making exciting plans for C which will take place in a few weeks as we have other plans next weekend! Also this week we have been brainstorming a few ideas for when Joes parents come to visit in about 5 weeks now!! More details of which to come soon! Thankyou as always for reading and we miss everyone reading from home loads!!!

Status: THIRTEEN WEEKS BEHIND!!

I’d like to go to the circus…

Not much interesting has happened this week people… its started with some days off Janik, Joe and I had been really looking forward to cirque de soleil – Toruk the last flight. We booked a night in Christchurch as we all had the next day off and thought we’d head out for a bit of a party after. Joe was very excited, not about the circus but about the fact that he got his very first uber there. For those of you who don’t know uber is an app where you can order a taxi from someone already going your way. It was all very exciting and we now feel like we have fully arrived in the 21st century. We arrived safe and sound, straight to the bar and then to our seats waiting for the show to begin. Our honest review is that we were quite disappointed, it was visually stunning but a lot of dancing around and not much circus. Having seen them before we left slightly disappointed but determined to still have a good night!

Christchurch really is not the place to party, but gin was flowing and we watched a band in a lively-ish bar. I fell asleep and we ended up getting kicked out so the boys took me home and continued their adventure. I don’t know the details of the rest of their night but I do know they ended up in a gay club. When they got back to the hostel at the early hours of the morning, Joe decided he didn’t want to sleep on his own and got in bed with some poor unsuspecting girl much to her horror and mine and Janiks amusement. We had a quick breakfast in the morning and a quick swim before heading home to sleep. The good news is we have found a nearby takeaway that is as close as we can get to our British version so we had a chilled evening in with some good food. My week back to work started with the most glorious rainbow I have ever seen the picture below doesn’t  do it justice but also shows in all its glory the lodge where we live incase you guys were interested.

Work is busy with milking 1200 cows every day now. The team has split into the A shed and B shed… so everyone is working hard and finding their feet within their teams. Its all going great and Joe and I both still really love it! Each days different and although we are well and truely settled in, each day still has its challenges which we love. My main challenge is falling off the motorbike, I nearly gave myself a concussion the other day by whacking my head of a fence post and managed to do a bit of a skid the day after. But its all good and no injuries apart from a few minor bruises.

IMG_2772

The lodge is busy as always and there has been time for a few impromptu parties that usually end up with everyone getting very drunk and being hungover the next morning! Especially Joe who still seems to be the king of the hangover.

IMG_2788

As well as the place for a party I have also been baking this week and managed to make a traditional New Zealand treat called lolly cake… Basically this consists of condensed milk, malt biscuits, marshmallows and a bit of butter! It is also supposed to be dusted in in coconut but Joe wasn’t keen on that so I left it out. The picture doesn’t do it any justice but trust me it is to die for and disappeared quite quickly so I think I’ll make a double portion this week!

Aside from this we’ve been enjoying the sunshine and our days off and keeping busy but relaxing all at the same time and as always enjoying a takeaway! #livingthedream I hope this gives you a little insight into our lives and please look out for more as we have a few busy days coming up so I’ll try my best to keep you all posted.

Status: TWELEVE WEEKS BEHIND – I might start reading children books! JK I have 3 weeks off in November and know a lot of reading will be done then so I’m not worried this is going to happen!

Why for me it takes two to tango…

When you type in google “travelling as a couple” you really do get mixed reviews from couples who have travelled together for years and think its amazing, to blogs from solo travellers stating how many couples they met that split up while they were away and spent nights crying into flea ridden hostel pillows. I have travelled solo and had amazing times, but this world is a lonely place and i’m sick of coming home to a house full with no-one understanding my experiences; people rolling their eyes as I tell them just how amazing the Taj Mahal is in real life. No one gets it when you get back and that’s what I want to be different. I want to experience everything this time with someone who will understand what I mean and someone who can reminisce with me about amazing people we met and places we visited, someone who won’t get bored with my endless travel pictures and go pro footage and who better than the man I love (aww).

When I explain to people my newest plans for my South East Asia adventure it is not uncommon to get this response: “What about Joe?” I often hear as if i’m just going to leave him behind like a forgotten pair of flip-flops… and more often than not my reply that he’s coming too is greeted by a sound of shock or a disapproving look! Then comes the dreaded question i’ve become used to hearing… “WHAT IF YOU SPLIT UP?” How the hell am I supposed to answer that? You never know whats going to happen in life and that’s why my answer to this question is: “what if we don’t go?”.

Now this may be hard for some people to get their heads around but this is my logic: Joe and I met in America where our first date was a trip to A+E after Joe accidentally broke my collar-bone during a drunken piggy back incident! Our second date consisted of chasing a goat in need of a hoof trim around camp before heading to the local pub for a few drinks and our third date was probably the week we spent in Atlantic city trying to make one pizza last 4 days and mine sweeping in the local casino because we’d well and truly run out of money (and I mean well and truly). It was chaos. But it brought out the qualities in each other that we loved, I fell in love with the fact that Joe was ALWAYS up for a party and Joe loved the fact that my claim to fame was drinking 12 pints of Guinness. We fell in love with each other but whats more important is we fell in love with the madness of travelling, not knowing where you’ll sleep or what you’ll do next was part of the magic that brought us together!

I remember getting on the plane back from America and kissing Joe goodbye, trying desperately to hold it all together knowing I might never see him again. But now I look back at that diary entry and I realise that wasn’t my real fear… come on I knew i’d see him again I was going to hunt him down the second I got home, but what I didn’t know was whether or not it would ever be the same in one place. Whether i’d get that buzz from the day-to-day chores of a “long term relationship” back home. With the stresses of running a household and holding down a job. The truth is I don’t think either of us do get that buzz. Now don’t take this the wrong way we are very happy together, we like our jobs, we rarely argue and we enjoy a lively social life with varied hobbies (including long romantic walks on the beach and all that jazz), and we are very much definitely still in love. This trip is not a last-ditch attempt to save a relationship on the brink of collapse that of course would be a recipe for disaster. This is about making things better, about utilising our strengths and working together to both get what we want out of our lives. It is about enjoying every day and falling back in love with the madness and chaos of being on the road while learning even more about each other as we go. More importantly it’s about spending our time together doing something that we both enjoy because let’s be honest you never know whats just around the corner.

So what if we split up? I’m afraid that’s a bridge we’ll have to cross if we get to it. But the reality for me is that if we stay put, work 9 to 5 and succumb to this rat race that so many people call their lives we probably will split up. We’ve spent nearly 2 years trying it and we’ve made the decision that it’s not for us right now. So wish us luck, and i’ll do my best to keep you all posted.
